Location: Maryland
Assateague Island was established as a national seashore in 1965. It is a 37 mile long barrier island known for its wild horses and pristine beaches. It is also a sanctuary for birds, providing habitat for around 300 different species. This island is separated from the mainland by Chincoteague (south) and Sinepuxent (north) bays.
